Whether you are visiting our Scottsdale plastic surgery center for a facelift, blepharoplasty or liposculpture procedure, your safety is of our utmost concern. That’s why our plastic surgery staff will spend ample time to answer your questions, address any concerns you may have and advise you on the best way to prepare for your upcoming plastic surgery. In addition to being mentally ready for your procedure, it is also important for our Scottsdale plastic surgery patients to be ready physically.
Part of getting ready for your surgery may include avoiding any number of prescription or over-the-counter medications. Scottsdale blepharoplasty patients, and any other surgery patients for that matter who are undergoing anesthesia as part of their elective procedure should be prepared to avoid taking aspirin and other aspirin-containing products as much as two weeks prior to your surgery. Aspirin is known for thinning the blood and lengthening the amount of time it takes the blood to clot naturally. Any time a patient undergoes a surgical procedure where tissues are being cut, there will be bleeding. The use of aspirin in the blood stream will interfere with the clotting process.
Our Scottsdale surgery practice advises all surgery patients to avoid the use of all sources of aspirin two weeks in advance of surgery. In addition, we ask patients to refrain from taking aspirin two weeks after surgery as well. Along with avoiding aspirin and any aspirin-containing products, we also ask our Scottsdale patients toavoid a variety of additional over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements that you may currently take as part of your normal diet. Please see our list below to find a complete list of over-the-counter and herbal supplements that we ask you to avoid prior to your surgery. In discontinuing the use of common over-the-counter medications like Alka Seltzer, we also ask that you avoid taking certain vitamins such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E.
It is also important to discontinue any herb supplements that can interfere with your surgical procedure. Below, you will find a full list of herbal supplements that our surgical staff will advise you to discontinue. These include Garlic, Ginseng, Gingko and Ginger. While it is important to stop taking aspirin at least two weeks prior to your surgical procedure and for the two weeks following, you may take other forms of pain relievers such as Tylenol and acetaminophen products. If you have any questions regarding this list of medications, please don’t hesitate to contact our Scottsdale Surgery office at any time. We look forward to providing your care.
