Should I Be Using Hyaluronic Acid?

Hobgood Facial Plastic Surgery

Whether you’ve stepped into a spa, an aesthetics medical practice, or a department store, chances are pretty high that you’ve heard the ingredient hyaluronic acid referenced. But what is hyaluronic acid and why should you be using it? Hyaluronic Acid is particularly helpful in patients that have aging skin, and for patients that reside in drier climates. Living in a drier climate puts you more at risk of having dehydrated skin- like our patients in Arizona! A few reasons we love hyaluronic acid are:

  • HA is non-comedogenic, meaning it will not clog your pores (no black heads, white heads, or blemishes!). HA is also safe and recommended for patients that have acne and breakout-prone skin. A common misconception for patients with acne is that they should not moisturize and sadly this common myth could not be more false. While heavy moisturizers are not best-suited for acne, stripping the skin of all oils will actually make a patient break out even more. HA is the perfect balance of hydration without being too heavy or occlusive.
  • Our natural production of HA slows down with age. By adding HA to your home care regimen you are able to both replace your naturally depleting hyaluronic acid production, but also stimulate your body to continue future production.
  • Hydrated skin will always appear better-looking and more youthful than dehydrated skin. By simply adding a topical HA to your skin care routine, you will quickly notice an improvement in the appearance of your fine lines, wrinkles, and texture.

Our favorite HA products are PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Boosting Serum and SkinMedica HA5.
