Fractional Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing

The Fractional Erbium Laser Resurfacing Procedure

Fractional Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing removes the outermost layer of the skin very precisely to reveal smoother underlying skin. The procedure also activates collagen in the skin to promote tightening.

Erbium facial resurfacing is performed as an outpatient procedure with a local anesthetic and sometimes a mild sedative. You will remain awake during the procedure but feel drowsy. Dr. Hobgood will precisely remove layers of skin to soften the appearance of superficial to moderately deep wrinkles and lines. The treatment generally lasts for 10 to 20 minutes, during which time you will feel heat in the treatment area.

After the procedure, the treatment area may be bandaged. If Dr. Hobgood bandages the area, it will be replaced in a few days. A week later, an ointment will be applied to the treatment area to prevent the unlikely formation of scarring. You will be able to resume normal activities in 7 to 10 days.

Fractional Erbium Laser Treatment Recovery

After you receive Fractional Erbium Laser resurfacing, your skin will likely appear pink or red, and some swelling may be present. Dr. Hobgood will provide detailed skin care instructions, which should be followed to achieve a positive result and avoid infection. Recovery generally takes 1 week. When your skin heals, it will need to be protected, as it will be susceptible to sun damage for a couple of months following treatment. You will want to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and use sunscreen.

Are You a Candidate?

Good candidates for Erbium treatments are looking for correction of wrinkles and fine lines and have realistic expectations about the results. Erbium resurfacing typically does not produce the best results if you have a darker skin tone.

Are there risks to Fractional Erbium laser resurfacing?

The Fractional Erbium Laser dramatically reduces many risks associated with laser procedures, including changes in skin pigmentation, infection and scarring. Complications are rare, but you may still experience these risks.

What is the recovery like after Erbium treatments?

Your skin will be pink and tender for up to one week following treatment. Immediately after treatment, you will feel tenderness similar to that of a sunburn. Over the next few days, you will experience itchiness and sloughing of the skin, and redness will begin to fade. Dr. Hobgood will provide skin care instructions. After your skin heals, and new healthier skin is revealed, avoid prolonged sun exposure for up to three months to avoid sun damage. Healing time varies by patient, but most patients heal within 5-15 days.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of Fractional Erbium Laser treatments you will need depends on the condition of your skin and the results you desire. For some patients, one procedure is sufficient. Others require three to four treatments.
