When it comes to nonsurgical facial rejuvenation, our Scottsdale area patients trust BOTOX and Dysport to give them smoother, more youthful-looking skin. These injectables effectively reduce fine lines and wrinkles on the upper face and can also be used as a preventative wrinkle treatment in younger patients. But skilled injectors use BOTOX & Dysport for many other cosmetic and clinical uses as well. Keep reading to find out what these exciting products can do in the right hands.
Double board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Todd Hobgood and expert nurse injector Ashley Smith, RN, BSN, perform all injections in-office to ensure optimal, natural-looking results. Learn more about BOTOX and Dysport at our Scottsdale med spa serving patients throughout Arizona.

BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport are injectable treatments that use an active ingredient called botulinum toxin to temporarily relax muscles when injected just beneath the skin’s surface. These treatments safely block the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that tells the muscles to contract. As the muscles relax, the overlying skin lies flat and becomes smooth. In some cases, such as jawline slimming, the disabled muscle shrinks.

Dr. Hobgood's aesthetic team creates customized treatment plans tailored to each patient's cosmetic needs. Ashley Smith is a registered nurse injector specializing in BOTOX® and filler injections, while licensed esthetician Brooke Scatchard is a certified laser technician.
Meet Our Expert TeamBOTOX has several applications in both aesthetic and clinical medicine, including treating muscle spasticity, tremors, and voice disorders. Of course, it’s best known for treating facial wrinkles and fine lines.
Dysport, meanwhile, is a relatively newer BOTOX alternative. Its formula contains smaller proteins than those used in BOTOX, allowing it to spread faster over larger areas, such as the forehead. This gives it a quicker onset time for visible results but also means that higher amounts of product must be used to achieve the desired results.
| Best For | Approved By The FDA For… | Onset Time | Longevity | Unique Benefit | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BOTOX® Cosmetic | Precise, targeted areas | Forehead lines, glabellar lines, crow’s feet, neck bands | 3 to 5 days | 3 to 4 months | Gold standard with a long history of safety |
| Dysport® | Larger areas with stronger muscles | Glabellar lines | 2 to 3 days | 3 to 4 months | Has a thinner consistency for quicker diffusion |
BOTOX has FDA approval for use in the following areas:
Dysport has FDA approval for glabellar lines only; however, like BOTOX, it can be safely used “off-label” in other treatment areas when injected by a highly trained medical professional.

Neurotoxins like BOTOX and Dysport have cosmetic applications beyond wrinkle reduction. However, due to the precise nature of these treatments, you should trust only an experienced provider to avoid unintended results and side effects.
A BOTOX lip flip enhances the upper lip without adding volume. It exposes more of the upper lip vermillion, creating the illusion of a taller, fuller lip. The results are similar to those of a surgical lift lip but not as long-lasting.
A BOTOX brow lift can provide a subtle, nonsurgical lifting effect by relaxing the muscles that pull the brows downward. Depending on your needs, you may be a better candidate for a surgical brow lift or upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).
BOTOX for a gummy smile relaxes the muscle that raises the upper lip. As a result, less of the top front teeth and gumline are exposed when the patient smiles, creating a more natural and proportionate appearance.
When injected below the ears into the “chewing” muscles of the jaw (the masseters), BOTOX and Dysport can slim a square jawline and create a softer, V-shaped profile. In addition to the cosmetic benefits, this treatment can improve the symptoms of TMJ and teeth-grinding by relaxing overactive muscles, weakening the force of grinding/clenching, and easing strain on the temporomandibular joint.
BOTOX and Dysport can curb hyperhidrosis by preventing specific nerves from activating the sweat glands under the arms. This treatment does not stop sweating entirely; instead, it stops the overproduction of sweat in the armpits.
Younger patients looking to get ahead of facial aging may get BOTOX and Dysport injections to stave off the formation of wrinkles. This preventative approach keeps the skin smooth before it loses the elasticity it needs to ward off creases. Some people call this “baby BOTOX.”
The number of units needed to achieve your desired results determines your BOTOX pricing. This figure will vary by the size and number of treatment areas and the extent of your concerns. Once we have the opportunity to evaluate your skin and discuss your goals with you, we can give you a transparent quote that reflects your customized treatment plan.
Dysport generally has a lower per-unit cost than BOTOX but requires roughly 3 times the number of units to achieve the same results due to its thinner consistency. So the total cost is often comparable between brands.

A liquid or nonsurgical facelift combines BOTOX or Dysport injections with dermal fillers to restore volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. It is ideal for patients with early signs of aging who are looking to refresh their look with minimal downtime. While it is a great option for facial rejuvenation, it can’t rival the transformation that facelift surgery can achieve.

With so many options available for BOTOX and Dysport injections, choosing an experienced physician is especially important. Proper injection is more than just an excellent technique. It requires an advanced anatomical knowledge of the exact locations and functions of the facial muscles. Only with an expert can you truly harness the potential of the service you’re paying for!
Dr. Hobgood and our nurse injector, Ashley Smith, perform a careful examination and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Our patients receive safe, effective, and individualized care with precise, natural-looking results. See the difference that expertise makes by reading real patient reviews.
To ensure the best possible results, we recommend avoiding alcohol consumption and blood-thinning medications and supplements like aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, vitamin E, and fish oil for up to 48 hours before your treatment. This will help minimize bruising. We also recommend not wearing makeup to your appointment, as we will cleanse your skin prior to examination and treatment.
Dr. Hobgood or your aesthetic nurse injector will carefully map out the injection sites based on your unique facial anatomy. After cleansing your skin, they will make a series of quick injections with a very small needle. If needed for comfort, they can provide you with a cool compress, ice, or topical numbing cream.
Because the needles we use are so fine, you can reapply cosmetics and sunscreen almost immediately after your appointment. You are free to resume your daily activities with only minimal restrictions.

While there is little to no downtime after BOTOX or Dysport, we advise you to avoid lying down for the first 4 hours to prevent the product from spreading. In addition, we ask you to avoid the following for the first 24 hours.
Rubbing the injection site
Strenuous exercise
Drinking alcohol
Applying retinol creams
Excessive heat from saunas, tanning beds, etc.
These precautions are to prevent increased bruising, treatment site irritation, or product migration following your treatment.
BOTOX and Dysport typically last 3 to 4 months; however, some individuals metabolize neuromodulators faster than others. We recommend booking regular maintenance sessions (typically every 90 days) to ensure continuity in your results.

In addition to dermal fillers, we frequently combine neuromodulators with other nonsurgical treatments, including:
BOTOX and Dysport are also used to help patients maintain their results after facial plastic surgery.
